To some extent I understand the mindset of “People aren’t their forefathers and they can avoid their fate”. Except Dany was raised under this toxic mindset and not given enough context about the failure of the Targaryens and Valyrians. Her entire claim to rule anywhere is based on “I am the blood of the dragon and Old Valyria”. Her entire goal is to conquer a continent based on birthright even though nobody really wants her. Her basis of power even in Meereen is through dragons, that represent nuclear deterrents. Nobody has as much power as her in Planetos and even when she has good intentions, she is massively underequipped to rule the way she does. That only pushes her further towards using her dragons to assert her rule.
One ruler who Targ fans bring up as a positive is Aegon V. He became Dunk’s squire and traveled the Seven Kingdoms and learned about the smallfolk. But he failed to accomplish what he wanted as a ruler because he never really learned to rule. Fed up of constantly compromising to the high lords he became more and more obsessed with bringing back dragons in order to make them bow to his will. That’s what brought about the tragedy of Summerhall. Even the better Targaryen rulers wrote their doom because of their obsession with prophecy and dragons. Even if he was problematic, Rhaegar was better than Aerys II. But he too was prophecy obsessed and thought it was on him to save the world and he made multiple destructive choices to people around him to make sure he fulfilled the prophecy. All it did was drive out the Targaryen dynasty. And the PTWP might just be his sister who was born posthumously. Is she a saviour? Or was the prophecy misinterpreted? Is she a harbinger of destruction instead?
The foreshadowing for Dany’s fall arc is like a mountain that keeps building in re-reads. Is she completely evil? No. The tragedy of Dany is even if she has crossed the line many times, she could still stop and try to turn it around. But she won’t because if she looks back she is lost. And so, she will commit hypocrisy after hypocrisy because the more she feels wronged by people the more entitled she will feel and several - including innocents - will suffer for it. When given the choice between her dragons and actual people, she will ultimately choose her dragons because they are her “children”, who were born from her need and grief to replace those she lost.
The problem with Dany stans or people who refuse to see her fall arc is that they don’t consider that even well meaning Targaryens ultimately failed because of their obsessions, which is what Martin means by “madness” rather than literal madness.

My cars wheel recently got dented; I was told at the shop the tire can’t be fixed and the rim needs replacing. I can’t get to work without my car. The estimated price to fix it is $130—and that’s with my insurance.
